Welcome to the new ICMM website!
My name is Matthew Tanner, and I have the honour to serve ICMM as its President. I am also the Director of the ss Great Britain maritime museum and historic ship in Bristol, UK.
ICMM represents a worldwide community of maritime museums, each of which collects, nurtures and presents the rich maritime heritage of their diverse communities and marine environments. At the same time every single one of us is connected together by the sea, and every maritime museum reaches out across the oceans. Connecting together and sharing our experiences helps us build lasting professional and personal relationships which enhance our work in our home ports. My museum has benefitted very much from these contacts and embracing our international connections.
This new website, launched in February 2020, provides a platform for readers of all kinds regarding the purpose and nature of ICMM as a worldwide network of maritime museums. It also offers resources and policies on maritime archaeology, maritime curatorship and historic vessels. Through our monthly e-newsletter and regular social media updates we provide a platform to share our Members’ news, to publicize forthcoming ICMM congresses and events, and to highlight interesting features on contemporary museum and wider maritime heritage matters. Please explore the site to learn more about ICMM and all our work.
ICMM’s biennial Congress is open to maritime museums, maritime-related organisations and individuals involved in the world of maritime heritage worldwide. You can read more about our Congresses, including the next Congress in Canada in 2022 and how to apply to host an ICMM Congress, here.
Our downloadable leaflet “About ICMM” is available in English, French, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese and Russian, with other languages to follow. Click here to view and download.
We hope to see you at the next Congress!
