Today marked the first Forum for Asia-Pacific Maritime Culture, hosted by Hong Kong Maritime Museum, together with the China Maritime Museum. The event held special significance this year, as it coincides with the 20th anniversary of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum and the 15th anniversary of the China Maritime Museum. Hosted in association with the International Congress of Maritime Museums Regional Meeting, this forum aimed to convene leading scholars, maritime professionals, and cultural experts from the Asia-Pacific region and around the globe. Together, participants explored critical issues surrounding the protection of maritime cultural heritage and the promotion of sustainable practices for the marine environment.

The 2025 Asia-Pacific Maritime Culture Forum brought together experts to explore everything from underwater archaeology and Zheng He’s legacy, to the role of port cities and the future of ocean sustainability. Key themes included preserving maritime heritage, connecting global histories, and using science and education to protect our oceans for the future. A great mix of history, culture, and forward-thinking ideas.

The day started with keynote papers by Kristen Greenaway (ICMM President, and President & CEO of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, USA) and AN Laishun (Chairman of the Asia Pacific Alliance of International Councils of Museums; Vice President of the China Museums Association; Professor at Shanghai University).
